Reborn Rooney promises bright future
Wayne Rooney did much more than score those two penalties in Manchester United’s stunning comeback at Chelsea. Suddenly, there was a blossoming of all that is so compelling about watching him play – the drive, the energy, the vision, that uncanny ability to see angles and slide passes through them that can put him in charge of a game when the mood takes him. It was fabulous to watch, just as it was when he performed in the same way in the FA Cup win at Manchester City earlier this month. The trouble is this form is appearing only in fits and starts at the moment. And in this week of crisis for the England team, it also provoked a longing for him to begin repeating such displays on a consistent basis for the national team. Now that Fabio Capello is gone, there is a sense that the long-term future is back on the agenda. If the next boss gets a proper helping of the Rooney who came out for the second half at Stamford Bridge, his job will be so much more fulfilling and enjoyable.

Nearly all the papers predict that Tom Cleverley will return from injury for United against Liverpool on Saturday, though The Times suggests Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are “unlikely to be risked”.

And many of the nationals pick up on the Ryan Giggs quotes in which the winger challenges United to stay above Liverpool as English football’s top club.
