As the build up continues and gathers pace for the big game this Saturday against our hated arch-rivals, Liverpool, the team we love to hate and that too with a passion wherever you are in the globe, let’s take a glimpse back in the not so distant past; to last Sunday to be precise.

It was no doubt a great game for the neutrals. We were undeservingly one goal behind in the first half but for all our good play, we lacked the killer pass or cross to really trouble Chelsea but certainly we didn’t deserve to go into the break one goal down. Jonny Evans, who otherwise had a great game was very unlucky to score that own goal. Question marks again on Patrice Evra who was turned so easily by Daniel Sturridge. At the start of the second half, before we could get into gear and apply pressure, we got a kick in the teeth by a marvellous strike by Juan Mata and a few minutes later, we were stunned as a free kick was missed by Michael Carrick and Rio Ferdinand couldn’t get to the ball before David Luiz and the Brazilian’s header took a sizeable deflection of the English defender to give Chelsea an unlikely 3-0 lead. As I sat there watching what was unfolding in front of my eyes, trying to comprehend what was going on, my thoughts shifted back to the match against Chelsea at Old Trafford in September when we raced into a 3-0 lead without playing anyway as good to deserve such a lead. Maybe it was the justice of the football gods at work. However, I always felt that if United put in a sustained period of pressure and if we scored soon, we might stage a trademark fight back to draw or even win the match. We did just that and according to the justice of the match, we deservedly shared the spoils.

Moving on and looking forward to the next big one which is on Saturday, I feel that the come-from- behind draw would do United a lot of good for the confidence of the side. At long last, there was a positive sign to suggest that we could retain the title. I might be excessive in my last opinion but that is what I feel. We played very well at the start of the season and have stuttered since the hammering we took at home against Manchester City. We have repeated our good form in some matches but have not been consistent to sustain it for long. We have shown good performances in glimpses but not maintained it throughout the match. We have won by grinding out results and got results even when we don’t play well but that is always a sign of a champion team. Whatever the reasons have been, we have largely not been at our very best yet. Every season there is a turning point and I feel this hard-earned draw against Chelsea could just be it for United. Moreover, this is the period of the time when United traditionally get stronger and grow from strength and strength.

Bring on Liverpool! The battle would be fascinating, exciting and expected to be fiery. I would hope that the crowd would be at full volume from the start to finish and the players chosen can give the fans lots to cheer about. The 3-2 win of last season seems like a very distant memory now and in our last 4 matches against them, we have won once, drawn once and lost twice. We dominated at Anfield but were beaten heartbreakingly near the end. Hopefully it would even itself out this Saturday and we would get a win. It is the one win that we will savour immensely and Liverpool is certainly the one team that we would love to beat any time, any day, anywhere.

Our injury situation appears to be clearing up with Ashley Young and Wayne Rooney making a return against Chelsea. Nani and Tom Cleverley are expected back soon perhaps as soon as Saturday. We will know more about the injury situation from Sir Alex’s pre-match press conference on Friday. For now, whoever plays I am sure it’s fair to say that we are all pumped up and waiting for Liverpool with bated breath.

Expectations are high at Manchester United and rightly so.

Stirring comebacks are seen as mere indicators of the spirit ingrained in Sir Alex’s teams and are no longer viewed as remarkable because they happen so often. Without even glimpsing at past results, it is possible to plunder the memory bank for the Reds’ incredible powers of recovery.

Some teams take months to turn around poor form or overcome costly mistakes. United take minutes.

There was nothing poor about the champions’ display at Chelsea despite facing a heavy beating with 40 minutes still to play. Many have found themselves in a similar position at Stamford Bridge and staring down the barrel. United were hammered 5-0 in 1999 and a Joe Cole-inspired 3-0 defeat clinched the title for the Blues in 2006.

United did not deserve to be losing and yet it was turning into an embarrassing afternoon. With a 3-0 reverse at Newcastle fresh in the minds, it would have been easy to write this off as another bad day at the office. Instead, Sir Alex took action, throwing on Javier Hernandez, later admitting he should have started with the predatory ‘Little Pea’. Paul Scholes was also introduced to provide another reminder of what a wonderful footballer he still is.

Once a foothold in the game was established, momentum was maintained and Chelsea were pegged back to level terms with Hernandez’s header. Surely this was a point gained rather than two lost, even if some fans questioned how United were in such a position against a home team shorn of John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ramires, Ashley Cole and Didier Drogba.

The manager may have complained that his side deserved all three points but nothing should be taken away from a team that picked itself up from the floor and retrieved the situation so impressively. It was only the second time United have hit back from three goals down to force a draw in the Barclays Premier League. Eric Cantona helped inspire a similar fightback at Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day 1992. Of course, a 3-0 deficit at Tottenham was famously transformed into a 5-3 win at Tottenham in 2001 in another memorable game.

We don’t have to think back too long to last season’s victories at Blackpool and West Ham that successfully overturned two-goal leads. The miraculous 4-2 triumph at Everton in 2007 changed the face of the title race. There are plenty of other examples and it’s easy to see why such comebacks are viewed as the norm for Sir Alex’s United. Yet they cannot be taken for granted.

Even some commentators seem wary of ever writing the Reds off, in case a famous fightback is just around the corner, when results will be safely called in other fixtures. But this is a trait to be cherished. How many supporters of other clubs can justifiably always have faith that no situation is irretrievable? When a match is not going to plan and you can almost sense your mood being darkened for a considerable period of time, until the next fixture kicks off usually, there is still that inner belief still burning in the hope that all is not lost.

It’s what other fans probably think in reverse. They expect the Reds to bounce back perhaps because it is somehow part of a wider conspiracy, enormous amounts of good fortune or simply the opponents’ fault. They form the grudging acceptance that it is just ‘typical United’.

It is why, when a team can roar back from 2-0 down at home to an accomplished Spurs side in 2009 to romp home 5-2, that all anybody talks about from the second half super-show is that the hosts were fortunate to get a penalty call. It is also why when, in years to come, non-United followers will recall the Reds needed two spot-kicks to spark the comeback at Stamford Bridge and forget the three other strong shouts inside the Blues’ box.

None of this should matter to Reds fans. Knowing that any Sir Alex team is capable of pulling virtually any game out of the fire, no matter how dire the circumstances may seem, is something that should never be under-estimated. It makes supporting the club through thick and thin a pretty easy task – and certainly brings rewards of memories that will linger forever.

Edwin van der Sar has urged David De Gea to stand up to the rigours of the Premier League and fulfil his talent.

De Gea was brought in during the summer as a replacement for the retired van der Sar, but has enjoyed mixed fortunes so far this season. Sharing the #1 spot with Anders Lindegaard, the young Spaniard was dropped following a weak display against Blackburn but has recently found himself back in the team.

On Sunday he was again the talk of the town following brilliant saves from a Juan Mata freekick and a Gary Cahill effort and now his predecessor has urged him to stand up to the pressure of the Premier League and of being United’s number 1:

“It’s always difficult if you’re coming into a new club and new league, especially the English one. It’s a very demanding one, can be a very tough one.

“He has to deal with that. They paid a lot of money for him and he has to come through that.”

Having seen Paul Scholes return last season, the Dutch stopper also took the time to dispelled any notion of a comeback.

“I was at Carrington and he (Scholes) was watching a training session and I said, ‘So, how do you like it?’.

“He said, ‘Not really. I miss it’. He was still there doing his work as an assistant coach with the reserve team so it was probably a little bit easier to get back in.

“I got a few text messages from friends saying, ‘What about you?’

“I’m quite happy at the moment. There’s no doubt in my mind.”

Think back to the start of January.

We had just lost two on the bounce and were facing City away in the FA Cup.

Following our 6-1 mauling earlier in the season, many had predicted defeat for United at the Etihad Stadium; the final nail in the coffin that was United’s season.

Whilst things weren’t half as bad as the papers made out, we needed a little pick me.

It was highly unlikely we were going to splash the big money required to bring in a name that would appease some fans, but what Sir Alex did next proved that not only is he one of football’s great motivators, but that he has brilliant foresight.

Everyone remembers what they were doing when they got that shock news that Paul Scholes was back.

I was on the tube to work and in a brief spell overground I read a tweet from Nick Coppack saying he had been named on the bench. I thought it was a joke then I remember that whilst a fun and entertaining guy, it was unlikely that Nick would mess around with something as serious as this is.

Rapidly tweets of his return flooded my timeline and fans began to explode with delight.

Although Scholes played a part in City’s second goal that afternoon, since then he has failed to put a foot wrong.

The next game against Bolton, his home ‘debut’, he popped up with a goal to break the deadlock before half time and it’s been highs ever since.

There has never been any doubting Scholes’ ability but you could see he was getting run down as the season drew to an end last year. Despite this I don’t think there was a single United fan that wanted him to retire, so when he called it a day it was a massive disappointment.

But it seems like this extended break has been just what Scholes needed.

The time out not only appears to have rejuvenated Scholes, making him fresher, but also appears to ignited the fire in his belly too.

Scholes is called ‘Sat Nav’ by his United team mates due to his eye watering range of passing and whilst he will still spread you thin in an instant with a raking cross field pass, I think another suitable nickname would be ‘Metronome’.

Pick a game that he has played in since his return and you will remember that during his participation he has completely controlled the tiempo.

Against Stoke last week, he was Man of The Match as he pulled the strings dictating how the game would go. As United crashed out of the FA Cup, Liverpool only began to impress when Scholes had to go off as prior to this they were chasing his shadow and against Chelsea yesterday, it was when Scholes was introduced that United’s revival really began.

United’s midfield has been interesting this season, when we were playing the blazing gung ho football at the start of the season the criticism was that it offered no protection to the midfield. Then it stagnated and we struggled to create anything as the beautiful football ceased.

When Phil Jones stepped in to partner Carrick the play somewhat improved, but I feel that we don’t look anywhere as secure as we do with Scholes in there. I don’t feel threatened because he keeps possession so well, we can’t be hurt if we are continually on the ball and Scholes ensures this.

There isn’t a ball he can’t control either. No matter what pace the ball is played into him; head, chest or feet he will trap it and pass it off keeping us moving at speed rather than a less able player who may take more than one touch to get the ball under control, or not be able to control it at all.

Some have complained that Scholes’ return would have stunted the growth of some of our young players coming through but this clearly hasn’t been the case.

Whilst some of the players we are planning on integrating into the team in the future aren’t quite ready to be playing week in week out, who better to replace Scholes than Scholes himself? Further to this, what better education is there for players like Pogba and Cleverley than to learn their game beside one of the greatest central midfielders ever?

Pogba’s Premier League debut on Tuesday was undoubtedly made easier by having Scholes in there beside him and probably that bit more special too.

Bringing Scholes back has been an unmitigated success for me so far and we are just a month into his return. Scholes’ contribution to the team’s efforts have been telling rather than just nostalgic, he has made a real difference rather than scoring symbolic goals like the seventh in a 7-1 thrashing.

He is be using correctly by Sir Alex too and come May if we are able to lift the title, having overcome Man City, it will definitely be looked upon as one of the deciding moments in our season.

Manchester United produced a great comeback to take a point away from Stamford Bridge after going 3-0 down.

Two Wayne Rooney penalties and a header from Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez cancelled out a Jonny Evans own goal as well as efforts from Juan Mata and David Luiz.

Sir Alex Ferguson commended his players after the comeback but thinks the assistant referee could have done better with the decisions he made.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Sir Alex stated:

‘’It’s two points dropped because we played well, other than the ten minutes after half-time. It’s not easy getting back from 3-0 down. That’s a massive effort from my players.”

Asked about Chelsea new boy Gary Cahill’s challenge on Danny Welbeck, the Scot continued:

‘’It was a sending off. The linesman has given two penalty kicks against us at Old Trafford in the last two years, one against Arsenal and one against Liverpool from 45 yards away but can’t see that? I don’t blame Howard Webb, I blame the assistant.

‘’There was a pull on Ashley Young in front of the linesman again and he doesn’t give it. Yet he gives them at Old Trafford. I don’t understand it. I don’t know where they get them from.

‘’His jersey is pulled. Was he diving? If it’s a pull on the shirt he’s not diving obviously. The two penalties in the second half was justified but we could have had four.”

Ferguson was also grateful for Javier Hernandez’s leveller and admitted he should have started the Mexican international:

‘’To be honest I should have played Chicharito from the start. When he came on, he kept them on their toes, his movement, his positional play. Danny is an excellent player and will be a top player but Chicharito when he came on, it was a different game.”

Then the following March he was stripped of the captaincy as John Terry was reinstated as leader of the national team.

Ferdinand’s brother Anton is currently embroiled in a race storm after John Terry appeared to call him a ‘f*cking black c*nt’, and with United taking on Chelsea this weekend all the talk in the build up to the game centered on Ferdinand and Terry going head to head and if they would shake hands before the game commenced.

Ferdinand appeared on BBC’s Football Focus today to discuss the happenings in his life at the moment and you can’t help but feel impressed that a man associated with our club acquitted him self so well.

Some had expected/hoped Ferdinand to go on to the show all guns blazing and to have a go at Terry but he was dignified in his responses to Dan Walker and his whole demeanour just echoed how mature and responsible a man he has become.

“Anton is my little brother. We have grown up together and I have looked after him when we were kids.

Ferdinand, like the club during the whole Evra/Suarez saga, decided not to fan the flames but instead spoke sincerely on the effect the whole episode has had on his brother as well as his family.

Ferdinand should be applauded for how he is dealing with this situation and even if he didn’t tear into Terry the way many of us had hoped I, like many of you, are extremely proud and happy to associate such a man with Manchester United.

Now the title of this one might be rather annoying to some fans. Many (me included) have seen Tom Cleverley becoming something of a savior for our team. In truth, when we were 2-0 down against City in the Community Shield a while back, I was one among the many millions who were screaming for Michael Carrick to be taken off. And taken to the docks. And shot. Here was a boy who had singlehandedly turned the friendly against Barca on its head, sitting on the bench while we were stuck with a bumbling, slow, useless Geordie who wouldn’t be caught dead passing the ball forwards.

I’ll be honest, I hadn’t seen much of young Tom before the beginning of this season, other than the odd Wigan match or two, and I was left with the impression of someone rather impulsive, brilliantly talented, but lacking in that final area, misplacing that initial killer pass. Fast forward a year and Tom’s performances have made me gape with such frequency that it has conveniently created a foot-shaped whole in my face. He was absolutely mesmerizing to watch. The joyous passing, the movement, the desire going forward and the commitment staying back, all topped off with an ice cool head (and a nice hairstyle) to boot.

Then predictably, it all started falling apart, ironically, by no fault of his.

You see, that paragon of virtuous tackling, Kevin Davies, seemed it fit to do a Scholes on young Tommy, and since then, Cleverley has been casualty #1 at a rapidly filling up Carrington. Maddeningly, this isn’t a local occurrence. Tom Cleverley has many many attributes, but fitness doesn’t seem to be one of them. Cleverley has often been blighted (not in the Ferdinand-esque way) with injuries ever since he turned pro.

In March 2007, during a reserve game, Cleverley suffered a foot injury and was ruled out for 7 months. During his first loan spell at Leicester City during the 2008-09 season, Cleverley only managed 15 games as his loan spell came to a premature end when he suffered a season ending shoulder injury against Colchester United. He was forced to return to United and underwent treatment in April 2009. During the 2009-10 season, Cleverley – now on loan to Watford – managed 5 goals in 20 appearances for The Hornets before (this is becoming annoying) sustaining knee-ligament damage which resulted in a premature end to his season. Nevertheless, his stunning performances did not go unnoticed at Vicarage Road, as Cleverley went onto win the team’s ‘Player Of The Season” award.

Clearly then, Tom Cleverley is no Roger Federer. Although massively talented, Cleverley’s injury problems can cause a potential nightmare for United squad already reeling under the truckload of injuries they have suffered so far. If Cleverley will stay fit (and that is a massive IF), then there is no doubt that he will be an integral part of United current as well as upcoming seasons. But if he doesn’t…

This is where Paul Pogba comes in. Bought from Le Havre – poached as some would put it – for a considerably meagre sum, Pogba has risen through the academy ranks and has finally made his senior debut for the club during the match against Stoke City the last week. This is, by no means an easy task, especially for one so young. Not many who have made this journey have succeeded at the top of the tree (cue Luke Chadwick joke) but Pogba seems to stand out among the current crop. He has the build of Vieira and the touch of Scholes, and seems to be an effortless amalgamation of the two. Clever going forward and masterful staying back, The French U-19 captain seems a certain bet for a bright future at United.

But is he?

Forgetting the current injury crisis, United have a lot of players who can competently fill Pogba’s position. Darren Fletcher(when he is fit), Anderson, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs, Park Ji Sung and not to forget, Paul Scholes and Tom Cleverley. If Pogba is to make his way to the highest rung of the ladder, its going to take some effort. Considering his debut at Stoke though, this doesn’t seem to be much of an issue, as Pogba was excellent for the 20 or so minutes he played. He knew when to pass, when to bomb forward, when to sit back, when to dive in (which he didn’t at all), when to shoot, and crucially, where to move. In essence, he was much like a younger version of The Ginger One. Albeit, rather darker, taller and less inclined to maiming people.

He was also a major part of the FAYC winning Reserve team last season. Alongside Ravel Morrison (who is sadly no longer with us) he was a revelation. He scored when it mattered and assisted when it was needed. In fact he so impressed Sir Alex that the Scot commented “I mean if we hold Pogba back, what’s going to happen? He’s going to leave. You know, in a couple of years’ time when his contract is going to finish. So we have to give him the opportunity to see how he can do in the first-team and he’s got great ability” at the start of the 2011-12 season. Pogba was handed matches against Leeds United and Aldershot Town in the League Cup, and he impressed in both. Another pivotal fact is that Pogba has had no significant injury problems in his career. This for one, gives him a discreet advantage over Cleverley. In addition the fact that he’s almost 6’2” also helps, as United have lacked a dominant aerial midfielder ever since Ronaldo left.

However, Pogba has had his fair share of off-field antics. He has been widely portrayed in the news as seeking a move away from Old Trafford – asking for more shekels in essence. He has been widely linked with a host of Italian clubs, and unlike Wayne Rooney, he hasn’t come out vociferously against the media, which only served to extend the hype even more. There were reports of a falling out with Sir Alex, amid a refusal to sign a new deal at the club (which incidentally, he still hasn’t). SIr Alex has often been quoted as saying he would prefer to keep hold of the Frenchman, but that Pogba’s heart wasn’t in the idea. With gossip flying everywhere, it only seemed inevitable until something or the other happened. Happily for United fans, Pogba came out after the Stoke match and said that he “wants to stay at United”. Whew!

If Cleverley can manage to stay fit, then I cannot see Pogba overhauling the Englishman for a place in Sir Alex’s team list. Also, with players such as Anderson (No, I will not bet on it) and Darren Fletcher (when?) expected to return to action sooner rather than later, Pogba has to take every chance he is given. If not, he could well become another one of those “what-if” players that we so often end up seeing. Kind of like a Diego Forlan or a Gerard Pique. Hmm in retrospect, that isn’t actually a bad thing…

In the sport of football we deal with hyperbole all the time.

“Best player ever”, “Hottest young talent in the world”; statements like these are thrown around frequently and although people will put their mortgage on such claims, they are all subjective.

There are people who will say Maradona is the best player ever, some may argue Pele whilst some might even suggest that Messi has pipped both in his short but brilliant stint at the top of world football.

That’s the good thing about these statements, they will provoke endless hours of discussion on message boards, twitter, blogs and the like.

But there is one statement you can make that will be met with universal agreement:

“The Busby Babes were the greatest team the world never saw.”

On February 6th 1958 the Munich Air Disaster robbed the world of a potential dynasty. In their relatively brief, bright spell at the top of English football the world were given a glimpse of what The Busby Babes could potentially do, so we can only wonder what would have happened if the team was allowed to reach it’s peak.

It is easy to highlight him, but for those that saw Duncan Edwards his death was a tragedy in itself. A player of such brilliance would surely have gone on to achieve greatness had he survived, but instead we are left with just memories, a star that will forever burn brightly rather than ever having faded.

Thus it is understandable that there has been such excitement with Phil Jones, a player likened to Edwards.

Players of Edwards’ ilk come around once in a generation, if even that, so for Sir Bobby Charlton to even liken the two is enough to build anticipation, as those of us that were unlucky not to have seen ‘Big Dunc’ cling to the hope that we may get some sort of an encore.

It isn’t just Edwards though, players like Taylor, Coleman, Jones, Whelan, Byrne, Pegg and Bent were all parts of a team that could have gone on to achieve immortality.

Having conquered England, in Europe they were finding their feet and it is felt that had the disaster not taken place Real Madrid would not have won the first 5 European Cup competitions.

But that isn’t the biggest tragedy.

Beyond football we have to realise that amongst the 23 fatalities a large number of the dead were young healthy men, football becomes of secondary importance when death is added to the equation.

As United fans we often look at the effect the crash had on the club in footballing terms, but we have to remember the effect it had on their families, friends and people who knew them because whilst they were footballers they were also fathers, brothers, sons, cousins etc

The tragedy rocked the country and football itself, Real Madrid offered to donate the European Cup they won that season to the club but we rejected, and gestures like that confirm this.

They is a saying ‘People never get the flowers while they can still smell them’, meaning people only get praise when they have passed, but in the Babes’ case their deaths simply brought more as people fully understood what they could have become.

Like many, I will have to make do with footage and second hand accounts of the brilliance of Sir Matt Busby’s side, but I 100% believe there is no over exaggeration or hyperbole when people claim that when Flight 609, carrying Sir Matt Busby’s Manchester United, skidded on the runway of the Munich-Riem Airport and crashed, it robbed the world of ‘the greatest football team the world never saw’.

Ferdinand took over when Terry was initially stripped in February 2010, but had the captaincy taken off him and handed back to Terry just over a year later.

This caused somewhat of a rift between Ferdinand and Capello and in ruling himself out of the running, he alluded to it.

Speaking on Twitter, Ferdinand announced:

“I don’t want to be england captain after the last episode, just want to concentrate on playin(sic) for utd & if I make the squad then as ever I’ll be delighted”

The striker is highly thought of at Old Trafford, and having been an integral part of the team that won the FAYC last season, scoring twice in the 2nd leg of the finals, Keane earned a call up to England’s u21 team.

His continued good form at reserve level saw him make his debut against Blackburn in December and was again included in the team that faced Stoke on Tuesday.

Having had a taste of first team football, Keane now can’t wait for more. Speaking to the club’s official website he said:

“Coming up from the Academy, it’s what we aspire to do for years.

“It’s always a dream of ours to do that and getting to do it was really special. It’s been good in training. Gradually, I’ve been brought into it quite a lot recently and the standard is obviously very high. There’s a good tempo and all the lads helped us settle in really well. It’s been really enjoyable.

“The aim is to keep working hard in training, keep developing in Reserves games and score as many goals as I can. Hopefully, I’ll get another chance in the first team, do as well as I can and keep pushing on from there.”
